In 2014, we lost our partner, associate, and friend. Charlie was a long-time and successful General Manager of private clubs in Texas, Alabama, the Carolinas, and Florida for over 30 years. More recently, he was a successful and respected executive search consultant and was a founding Principal of GSI Executive Search with partner Dick Farrell. Charlie and Dick and the rest of the team at GSI have grown the firm over the last 20 years to become one of the largest and most respected search firms in the club and resort industry. Along the way, Charlie made close friendships with club managers, club chefs, and club clients through the years. His friendly and outgoing nature led him to touch so many lives and careers in the club world. Everyone it seemed knew, liked, and respected Charlie.
As many of you know, he was also an avid fly fisherman, birdwatcher, and conservationist. He lived on a "farm" and loved the great outdoors. Most importantly, he was a devoted husband to Jeannie, brother to his two sisters and brother, and a great friend to so many.
Charlie had a passion for the club industry and for passing it down to the next generation. He was very involved with a teaching and mentoring program for students at the Dedman School of Hospitality at Florida State University. He cared deeply about these students. He was also a great friend to CMAA and was an active member of the association. He was a past president and board member of several chapters around the country and provided speaking engagements, consulting, and education to CMAA chapters in recent years.
To honor the memory of our dear friend and colleague, the "Charlie Hoare Scholorship Fund" has been established at the Dedman School of Hospitality at Florida State University. The scholarship will support the education of students interested in pursuing a career in club management.
